The children in Grade 1 plunged into the festivity of Mardi Gras, discovering more about this celebration, its unique colors and music, and how it enchantingly resembles our Brazilian Carnival. In this journey marked by intercultural dialogues, the little ones were captivated by a significant symbol: the King Cake – a cake adorned with the characteristic Mardi Gras colors: purple, green, and yellow. Additionally, the cake traditionally includes a figurine representing the baby Jesus, visited by the Wise Men. In the American tradition, the person who finds the piece with the figurine will be very fortunate in their life!
In a special visit to the cooking lab, the children had the opportunity to collectively create a King Cake in a sensory experience brimming with colors and flavors, facilitating a connection of interdisciplinary skills and knowledge using the English language as a means to express themselves. They managed to count the ingredients and the minutes needed for the cake to bake, make a record of the ingredients and the recipe process both in writing and through drawings, and delve into the cultural dimension of Mardi Gras in an English-speaking country.
The children were encouraged to think about what element could be used inside the cake to represent “good fortune”. However, in Grade 1B, Bento Soares, with great creativity suggested, “Let’s use an orange peel to be the baby Jesus”! We followed his suggestion, and Davi Capeleiro was fortunate enough to receive the special piece, excitedly celebrating, “I prayed so much to win”! Consequently, the idea from Grade 1B was quickly embraced by Grade 1A and C.
“It tastes good!” exclaims Laura Tosato from Grade 1D while enjoying the colorful slice of cake, as Isabela Uchikawa proudly displays the nut that represented the lucky charm found in her piece.
This experience was a rich and engaging immersion where the children not only enjoyed the cake they created but also expanded their linguistic and cultural skills with the colors and happiness of a shared experience filled with new discoveries.

Explorando os encantos do Mardi Gras
As crianças do Grade 1 mergulharam na festividade do Mardi Gras, descobrindo um pouco mais dessa festividade única, suas cores e músicas características e que ainda se assemelha de maneira encantadora ao nosso Carnaval brasileiro. Nessa jornada marcada por diálogos interculturais, os pequenos se encantaram com o símbolo marcante: o King Cake – um bolo decorado com as cores características do Mardi Gras: roxo, verde e amarelo. Além disso, tradicionalmente o bolo contém um boneco representando o menino Jesus, visitado pelos Reis Magos. Na tradição norte-americana, a pessoa que ganhar o pedaço terá muita sorte em sua vida!
Em uma visita especial à cozinha experimental, as crianças tiveram a oportunidade de juntas criar um King Cake em uma experiência sensorial recheada de cores e sabores, possibilitando uma conexão de habilidades e saberes interdisciplinares utilizando a língua inglesa como meio para se expressar. Pudemos fazer a contagem dos ingredientes e dos minutos necessários para o bolo assar, fazer os registros escrito e pictórico dos ingredientes e processo da receita respectivamente e explorar a dimensão cultural do Mardi Gras em um país falante na língua inglesa.
As crianças foram instigadas a pensar em qual elemento poderia ser utilizado dentro do bolo para representar a “boa sorte”. Entretanto, na turma do Grade 1 B, Bento Soares, com muita criatividade sugeriu “Vamos usar a casca da orange para ser o baby Jesus!”. Assim fizemos, e Davi Capeleiro teve a sorte de receber o pedaço premiado, celebrando entusiasmado “Eu rezei muito pra ganhar!”. Assim, a ideia do Grade 1B logo foi aceita pelo Grade 1A e C.

Esta experiência constituiu uma imersão rica e cativante na qual as crianças não apenas se deliciaram com o bolo que criaram, mas também nutriram seu repertório linguístico e cultural com as cores e alegria de uma experiência compartilhada cheias de novas descobertas.
