March 17th: a joyful “green day”! Celebrating St. Patrick’s was not only an opportunity for Emilie’s English Immersion curriculum students to improve their language skills in the additional language, but it was also a rich moment for them to learn about Irish culture.
St. Patrick, the patron Saint of Ireland, was a visionary religious man who spread the catholic faith using the three-leaf clover to explain the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) and whose motto was “Respect to be respected”; and the day of his death became the date to honor the Saint and also Irish heritage.
Nowadays it is a global celebration in which people gather with family and friends for a fun time, in parades, wearing green clothes and accessories and carrying shamrocks. In some major cities in the US, rivers are dyed with the color green and houses are decorated.
At Emilie it was not different. “Green moments” in diverse indoors and outdoors activities were carried out in a green scenario, prepared with students’ written production, pictorial records and decoration. Kids went on parades, ate green snacks, danced Irish music and role played, listened to Irish stories, discussed their curiosities, had online interactions with Irish teachers, went on treasure hunts looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and had fun with the “Leprechaun messes”.
Cultural practices are a key component for successful learning in an immersion classroom. Such experiences in different contexts contribute to the expansion of students’ cultural and linguistic repertoire as agents of their own learning.

Língua, cultura e tradições no Dia de São Patrício
17 de março: um alegre “dia verde”! Celebrar o dia de São Patrício não foi apenas uma oportunidade para os alunos do currículo de imersão em inglês do Emilie aprofundarem suas habilidades na língua adicional, mas também um momento rico para aprenderem sobre a cultura irlandesa.
St. Patrick foi um religioso visionário que difundiu a fé usando o trevo de três folhas para explicar a Santíssima Trindade (Pai, Filho e Espírito Santo) e que tinha como lema “Respeitar para ser respeitado”.
Hoje em dia é uma celebração global em que as pessoas se reúnem com familiares e amigos para se divertirem, em desfiles, vestindo roupas e acessórios verdes e carregando trevos. Em algumas grandes cidades dos EUA rios são tingidos de verde e casas são decoradas.
No Colégio Emilie não foi diferente. “Momentos verdes” em diversas atividades dentro e fora da sala de aula foram realizados em um cenário verde, elaborado com produção escrita dos alunos, registros pictóricos e decoração. As crianças desfilaram, comeram lanches verdes, dançaram música irlandesa e dramatizaram, ouviram histórias irlandesas, discutiram suas curiosidades, interagiram online com professores irlandeses, saíram em caças ao tesouro procurando o pote de ouro no final do arco-íris e se divertiram com as “bagunças dos duendes”.
As práticas culturais são um componente-chave para o sucesso do aprendizado em uma sala de aula de imersão. Tais experiências em diferentes contextos contribuem para a ampliação do repertório cultural e linguístico dos alunos como agentes de sua própria aprendizagem.
